Emmaretta with two Great Cats

The great cats are species of large felines similar to the smaller domestic cats of the rural areas and cities that prey on the game of the forests of the Old World.

Cats are a species of small, domesticated feline widespread throughout the Old World. Haunting cities, wilds, and farmhouses, cats breed with amazing speed. As they are generally self-sufficient and excellent at ridding a home or farm of annoying vermin such as rats, people do not object to offering shelter to these beasts. Cats come in a variety of colours and length of hair, though most cats are a mixture of colours and have curly, long, or short hair. Exotic cats may be spotted or hairless.[1a]

Throughout Tilea, and certainly, in the Casa di Ruggisce, cats are exceedingly well-regarded, but it isn't just simple farm cats that make the southerners' hearts sing. Tileans prefer their deadly and far larger cousins the great cats to have grace and skill during their gladiator games in the colosseums, for they see much of the gladiatore in them.[5a]

According to the scriptues of the Arch-Templar Dyre, cats are emissaries of the Old Night and commonly associated with witchcraft and ill omens. As such, the Cult of Sigmar shuns them.[2a] Cats are regarded as holy animals by the Cult of Ranald.[3a]

Imperial fishermen are known for the custom of sacrificing a cat by throwing it into the sea, to curry favor with the god Stromfels -- or at least divert the Shark God's attention elsewhere. Usually the unfortunate creature is collected from a squalid alley of one of the various ports.[4]

Common names for cats in the Old World include "Max," "Sausage," "Scruffy," "Sky," "Killer," "Slinker," "Socks," "Ashes," "Felix," "Fluy," "Kessler," "Ebb," and "Fritz."[1a]
