The claymore, also called the hand-and-a-half or the bastard sword, falls somewhere between the broadsword and the Great sword. The benefit lies in its versatility. Useable in either one hand or two, it provides a great deal of flexibility to warriors who would use shields while fighting, but need to be able to fall back on the damage potential of a great weapon. It seems to have been developed simultaneously in the Empire and Bretonnia, so who in fact can be credited with its design is subject to great debate.[1a]
