Free Lance

A Free Lance.

Just as Warriors of lower social orders can become Mercenaries, Squires or Nobles may offer their skills for hire by becoming a Free Lance (or freelance).[1a]

Role[]

Essentially, Free Lances are either titled aristocrats with a taste for adventure or expert cavalrymen from the lower orders who offer to place themselves on the front line of battle. Financial considerations take precedence over the dictates of honour and chivalry, and some Free Lances, lacking an employer, may even take on the role of the Protagonist, setting up disputations at a convenient bridge or stretch of road, challenging any armed traveller who passes and living by stripping the vanquished.[1a]

The Tilean city-states frequently make war among themselves. Consequently, there are many bands of Tilean mercenary knights willing to fight for one city or another. In times of relative peace, many seek employment elsewhere in the Old World, and are called Tilean Condottieri.[2]

Notable Free Lances[]

  • Blue Heron - Nuln of all the Grand Provinces of the Empire relies the most on hired mercenaries. The Tilean ‘Blue Heron’ condottieri have been on retainer for over a century.
  • Venators - The Venators, leaded by Etto the Fierce were mercenary knights at the pay of Miragliano, they defeated the arrogant Bretons under Baron du Bors to the Tournament of Ravola in 1425 IC.
  • Voland's Venators - A notoriously rowdy band of knights who fight as mercenaries in Tilea, the Border Princes, and the Empire.
