Skull of Katam

Skull of Katam

Katam was once a powerful and feared daemonologist, who soon became all too aware of his own mortality. Eventually he stroke a deal with Tzeentch; God of Magic and Change. In exchange for his soul, Katam would be granted eternal life, but Tzeentch never specified what kind of eternal life this would be. Katam's body still withered and aged, but his soul within would never extinguish. Determined to find a loophole so that he could both be freed from this contact and keep his eternal life, he traveled the entire world seeking out arcane knowledge and mind-boggling secrets of Chaos. However, he never found such a loophole and his body eventually failed him, and his spirit still remained inside a lifeless and unmoving body. Katam's spirit was still alive as his body slowly rotted away, and he was still all too aware of everything as he was buried alive; driving him mad in the process. Soon all that was left was his skull, that still holds his spirit to this very day.[2a]

Upon his death, the Skull of Katam was daubed with runes using the blood of the Chaos Dragon Baudros. The skull continues to utter words of power, and a wizard who listens may learn many arcane secrets. However, every time the bearer consults the skull, there is a chance it will reveal one of the true mysteries of the Realm of Chaos, imparting knowledge that blasts the mind with its scope and impossibility. In time, the skull's whisperings drive its owner insane, reducing him to a drooling madman whose gibberings are joined only by the eerie sound of Katam's laughter.[1a]
